CHILDREN OF COURAGE!

It takes a lot of effort these days for youth and the police to relate positively with each other. Young people oftentimes perceive police officers as being abusive and noncaring; police sometimes see youth in the community as "just another potential gang-banger."

Yet when they find that common ground that binds them together, and establish relationships built on trust, respect and understanding of each other, these two seemingly different groups have learned to work together in meaningful ways to improve their community, making it safer for all.

It is from these concepts that the Children of Courage Youth Symposiums were born. Originated in New Jersey by members of the New Jersey Grand Council of Guardians, it has expanded to become a premier youth empowerment and development program of the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers. Now presented in nearly six states, the Children of Courage Youth Symposium brings information and education to both community youth and their law enforcement guardians, as well as parents teachers and other stakeholders in the community.

OCTOBER 29 - 30 2009 IN PROVIDENCE, RI

The Children of Courage Youth Symposium will be presented in conjunction with the Fall 2009 Board of Directors Meeting and Law Enforcement Education and Training Conference of the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers, being held at the Marriott Hotel in Providence, Rhode Island. This two-day session is designed to provide lessons, tools and life-skills to youth ages 15 - 18 which will assist in their development as future leaders of the community, and seek to strengthen their bonds and relationships with members of the law enforcement community.
